Q&A with Ashwin Kumar Shankar, D.O.

1. What drew you to medicine?

I was drawn to medicine because it brings together science, problem-solving, and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in someone’s life. My background in nutrition and experiences working in the community have taught me how much our health is influenced by the choices we make every day. I believe in educating patients about evidence-based treatment options and empowering them to take an active role in their health through shared decision-making. I especially enjoy helping patients understand the “why” behind their symptoms and working together to develop a treatment plan that fits their individual needs and lives. I love that medicine allows me to continually learn while building meaningful, long-term relationships with patients and their families.

2. What are your passions outside of work?

Outside of medicine, I love spending time with family and friends, traveling, discovering great food, and enjoying live music and concerts. I previously trained in Indian classical dance and music and continue to enjoy both as meaningful ways to stay connected to my culture. And, as any Harry Potter fan will tell you, I’m always happy to revisit the wizarding world.

3. What’s your favorite restaurant?

Definitely Sarvanaa Bhavan. I especially love their thali. It’s a great way to enjoy a little bit of everything.

4. Who would you consider to be a role model and why?

My parents. Their emphasis on gratitude, education, and service shaped how I think about life and medicine.

5. What’s your favorite movie or book?

The Harry Potter Series.

6. What was the last TV show you binge-watched?

Ted Lasso.

7. What do you enjoy most about being a Medical Provider?

The most rewarding part of being a medical provider is helping people make sense of something that may have been confusing or frustrating for a long time. Allergy and immunology is particularly fulfilling because many conditions can significantly affect a person’s quality of life, yet there are often several ways we can help. I enjoy the detective work of putting the pieces together, but even more, I enjoy educating patients and partnering with them to find a treatment plan they feel comfortable with. It’s incredibly rewarding when a patient comes back and tells me they are doing something they couldn’t do before.

8. What is the best advice you have ever received?

The bravest thing you can do in life is ask for help. Even in moments when you may feel alone, there is always someone you can turn to – someone who will listen, support you, and help you find your way forward. You don’t have to carry everything on your own.

9. If you could have a conversation with any person or character who would it be and why?

I would choose Albus Dumbledore. Beyond the Harry Potter connection, I have always appreciated his perspective on people, choices, and the importance of using knowledge and influence responsibly. I think it would be fascinating to have a conversation with him about how he approaches difficult decisions, mentorship, and the balance between wisdom and humility.

10. If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Detroit Style Deep Dish Pizza.
